Titus 1:10-16 - 13th February 2022

OBSERVATION
What does it say?

  1. Read Titus 1:10-16
  2. Who does Paul identify as the "rebellious" or "insubordinate" people? (verse 10)
  3. What command(s) do you see in this passage?
    1. What reason does Paul give for his command(s)?
    2. What were these people doing that Paul felt the need to give this command?
  4. Do you notice anything that connects to the previous section, Titus 1:5-9?

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. Read Galatians 1:6-9, Galatians 3:1-5, and Galatians 5:2-4.
    1. How does this help you to understand the "circumcision party"?
    2. What do they seem to be teaching Christians, including Christians in Crete?
  2. Who is "them" in verse 13? Is Paul telling Titus to rebuke the false teachers or someone else?
  3. What does the word "rebuke' mean? What is the goal of rebuking?
  4. Read Titus 1:1-2.
    1. How is this different from the false teachers' approach to godliness
    2. How should "knowledge of the truth" be connected to godliness?

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1.  What are some false gospels that Christians may encounter in the world today?
    1. Where do they hear these false teachings?
    2. How can we help one another to be careful who we listen to?
  2. What is the danger of professing to know God but not actually living it out? (verse 16)
    1. Are there areas in your life where you know you are missing the mark? What would it look like to confess it to God and obey?
    2. Everyone has "blind spots" where they can't see where they are missing the mark. Who is someone you can ask to help you see your blind spots?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made.
  4. Sing all or part of the song Jesus Paid It All to God and to one another.

John 1:35-51 - February 6th 2022

OBSERVATION
What does it say?

  1. Read John 1:35-51
  2. Who begins to follow Jesus in verse 37?
    1. Who did they follow previously?
    2. Who else follows Jesus in this passage? (4 total)
  3. How is Jesus described? What are some names given to him? (make a list)
  4. Jesus tells the two disciples in verse 39 to "come and see". What else does Jesus say the disciples will see? (John 1:50-51)

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. Summarize the passage in one sentence.
  2. In verse 37, two of John the Baptist's disciples decide to follow Jesus. Why do you think that John the Baptist didn't follow Jesus himself?
    1. What was John's purpose from God? (think back to John 1:29-31)
  3. Why does Jesus rename Simon in verse 42?
    1. Who are some people who were renamed in the Old Testament?
    2. Who gave them a new name? 
  4. In this passage, the author John gives us some word definitions (John 1:38, 41, 42)
    1. Why do you think he explains those words?
    2. What does this reveal about the original audience of this book?
  5. Read Genesis 28:10-22
    1. What connections do you see between that passage and John 1:47-51?
    2. What is the name that Jacob gives to the place where he sees this vision?
    3. What do you think it means that Jesus says "you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man"?

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. In this passage, we see Andrew and Philip follow Jesus and bring others along.
    1. Are you following Jesus? How is your relationship with Him going?
    2. What is something that you've been learning about Jesus (or His Word) that you could share with a friend this week? (whether they're Christian or non-Christian)
  2. Jesus is described by many more names in this passage (Lamb of God, Messiah, Son of God, King of Israel, etc.) 
    1. Why is it important for us to know these things about Jesus today?
    2. What misconceptions do people have about Jesus in our world today?
    3. How can you help show others who Jesus truly is?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made.
  4. Sing all or part of the song Jesus I My Cross Have Taken to God and to one another.
