What does it say?

  1. Read John 2:1-11
  2. What occasion is described?
    1. Where was it?Who was there?
    2. What problem arises?
    3. What happens?
  3. How does the author describe what happened? 
  4. What response is described?
  5. What conclusions does the author draw?

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. What is the significance of the lack of wine at a wedding?
    1. Can you think of any Old Testament passages which could help us understand 
  2. What does Jesus mean by his response to his mother?
    1. What does it mean that his "hour has not yet come"?
  3. What does it mean he "manifested his glory"?
    1. What does this sign point to?
  4. What is the significance of the author's comment in v.11?
  5. How does this connect to the gospel? (Consider what it shows us about Jesus' identity. Look at the previous context- how does this connect?)

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. How should we respond to this sign? 
    1. What does it show us about Jesus? (Consider his character, power, glory.)
    2. How should these answers change how we think, feel, live?
  2. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made

    OBSERVATION
    What does it say?

    1. Read Titus 2:1-6
    2. What is being contrasted by the "But"? (verse 10)
    3. What command(s) do you see in this passage
    4. Which groups of people are mentioned in the text?
    5. Compare and contrast the instructions for each of these groups.

    INTERPRETATION
    What does it mean?

    1. What does it mean, "teach what accords with sound doctrine."?
      1. What is "sound doctrine"?
      2. What "accords with sound doctrine"?
    2. What does the repeated phrase "to be" communicate?
    3. What role should older women play in the church? (verses 3-5)
    4. What does it mean "that the word of God may not be reviled."? (verse 5b)
    5. How does this connect to the gospel? (Look to the surrounding context, how does one become these things?)

    APPLICATION
    How should it change us?

    1. Which group do you fit into? How can you live out these characteristics? What gospel hope is there for these fruits to be produced in our lives?
      1. Confess ways you fall short of this and repent.
    2. What kind of community does this describe? How can we apply this to our lives together at Covenant Hope?
    3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made.
    4. Sing all or part of the song Not In Me to God and to one another.
