- What should be true of the teaching?
- What should be true of bondservants?
- What should happen as a result of these things? (v. 8, 10)
- What repeated words/ideas do you see?
- Are there any connections to previous verses? (e.g. 1:9, 2:5, etc.)
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- How would you define integrity?
- What do you think it means to show integrity in teaching?
- What would be an example of speech that could be condemned?
- Who are the opponents?
- How would dignity & integrity "put them to shame"?
- What does the repeated phrase "to be" communicate?
- How does the gospel enable someone to become these things?
- How would bondservants acting in these ways "adorn the doctrine of God our Savior"?
APPLICATION
How should it change us?
- Do you know of teachers that lack integrity or dignity? Perhaps outsiders have evil things to say about them.
- What's the difference between a teacher who sins and a teacher who lacks integrity or who has a pattern of unsound speech?
- How does this affect who we listen to in church or on the internet?
- In which ways can you model the characteristics described in these verses? What are some ways that you have fallen short of them?
- Confess ways that you fall short and repent.
- What would it look like to apply these things as a church? (e.g. How can we grow as a community of integrity, etc.)
- Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made.
- Sing all or part of the song A Christian's Daily Prayer to God and to one another.
