What does it mean?

  1. What do we learn about God?
  2. Why is it boastful to make definite claims about the future?
  3. What does v. 17 mean?
  4. What have the rich been doing?
  5. What is going to happen to them?
  6. What aspects (God, Man, Christ, Response) of the gospel are touched on in this passage?
  7. How does the gospel re-orient us to resist boastful planning, selfish-indulgence and defrauding others?

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. How should we plan and talk about the future?
    1. How are you tempted to be arrogant and boastful about your future?
    2. How does this view of God correct that? 
  2. Are you tempted to lay up treasures for yourself? How might this passage help you fight that? How do these truths warn you?
  3. Have you been defrauded? How do the truths of this passage comfort you?

What does it mean?

  1. How is wisdom seen or not seen?
  2. What is the connection between wisdom and...
    1. our conduct (v.13)?
    2. truth/falsehood (v. 14)?
    3. spirituality (v.15)?
    4. relationships (vv.17-18)?
  3. What are "bitter jealousy and selfish ambition" (vv.14, 16)?
  4. How do we get wisdom from above?
  5. How does the gospel connect to this passage?

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. How does the gospel empower a life of wisdom in us?
  2. Where are you tempted to be bitterly jealous or pursue selfish ambitions? (Another way to consider this question is- where is there disorder or vile behaviour in your life?) Repent of these sinful heart desires.
  3. In what ways can you pursue and promote the characteristics of wisdom from above unfolded in vv.17-18?
  4. Pray for Covenant Hope to be kept from earthly, unspiritual, demonic "wisdom" and to be showing "the meekness of wisdom [from above]" by growing in godliness.
