THE King's ransom

Read Mark 10:32-45 

  1. What is the setting of the passage?
  2. What does Jesus tell the disciples about what was to happen to him? (v. 33-34)
    1. How many times has Jesus told them this before?
    2. Do the disciples understand what he says?
  3. What did James and John, the sons of Zebedee, request from Jesus?
    1. How did Jesus respond to them? What questions did he ask them?
    2. How does their request contradict Jesus' earlier teachings? (Look back at Mk 9:33-37)
  4. What is the response of the other ten disciples when they heard of James and John's request?
  5. What are some similarities and differences between Jesus' teaching in Mk 10:42-45 and Mk 9:33-37?

Application:

  1. What does Jesus' foretelling of his death tell us about the sovereign plan of God?
  2. What does Jesus' foretelling of his death tell us about his obedience to the Father?
  3. What do we learn about Christian leadership from v. 42-45?
  4. What does it mean for Jesus to "give his life as a ransom for many"?
    1. What has Jesus' death and resurrection set us free from?
  5. Pray for members of the church to be marked by servant leadership.

THe Rich Young Man

Read Mark 10:17-31 

  1. Who ran up and asked Jesus a question? What does Mark tell us about him? (v. 17, 22)
    1. What did the man call Jesus?
    2. What was Jesus' response to him? 
  2. What was the one thing Jesus told the man he lacked? Why did Jesus tell the man this?  (v. 21)
    1. What does the man's response (v. 22) tell us about the condition of his heart?
  3. Jesus says it is difficult for those with wealth to enter the kingdom of God (v. 23). Where else did Jesus talk about entrance into the kingdom of God in Mark 10?
    1. What does this tell us about entrance into the kingdom of God?
  4. What was the disciples' reaction to Jesus' words? (v. 24, 26)
    1. What does this tell us about their understanding of the kingdom of God and entrance into it?
  5. How is Peter and the disciple's response to Jesus different from the rich young man (v. 28)?
  6. What does Jesus promise to the disciples in response to Peter? (v. 29-31)

Application:

  1. What was the one thing the rich young man refused to give up to follow Jesus?
    1. How are you tempted to store up treasure on earth as opposed to treasure in heaven?
  2. How does Jesus' teaching in v. 27 encourage us in evangelism?
    1. Pray for one another to share the gospel boldly this week
  3. What are some things you have had to sacrifice to follow Jesus?
    1. How can we encourage one another with Jesus' words in v. 29-31?
    2. What are practical ways you can bear the burdens of those who have sacrificed for Christ?
  4. Pray for members of the church who have left family for the sake of Christ and the gospel to persevere and find encouragement in Christ.
