Psalm 121 - August 10th 2018

Where Does Our Help Come From?

Read Psalm 121:

  1. What question does the psalmist start with? What does it mean that he lifts his eyes to the hills?
  2. What is the answer he provides to his own question?
  3. What reasons does he give for why the Lord is his help?
  4. There are several different metaphors or word pictures to describe the Lord. Consider each one--what do those different pictures communicate about God?
  5. Can you summarize the general promise this psalm states?

Application:

  1. What does it practically look like to look to the Lord for help?
  2. How should this shape the way you live? What would look differently, if you were able to live according to this promise all the time?
  3. How should we think about the promise that God will keep you from all evil? Does this mean that Christians cannot sin? What does it mean, and how should we live in response to that promise?

Psalm 47 - August 3rd 2018

Rejoice, The Lord is King

Read Psalm 47:

  1. What is the instruction given in the first verse of the Psalm?
  2. What reasons are given for that instruction (v2-4)?
    1. Why should those reasons result in praise?
  3. What is God’s position in relation to the world according to the psalm?
  4. What is the position of God’s people in relation to the world?
  5. How do the rulers (princes) respond to his rule in this psalm?
    1. How is this different from other psalms (like Ps. 2)?
    2. How does this fit with what is described in verses 2-4?
  6. What is the reason given for the rulers’ response to God?
  7. What is the result of all this?

Application:

  1. Do you rejoice in the Lord’s rule?
  2. What does it mean that the nations are subdued under God’s people’s feet? How does this apply to us as Christians today?
  3. How should we relate to the world based off of this psalm?
  4. How should we respond to the fact that the princes gather as God’s people? How does this apply to us?
