Psalm 121 – 9th July 2021

Observation

What does it say?

  1. Read Psalm 121
  2. What question does the psalmist ask?
  3. Who is the psalmist asking the question to? (who is "you"?)
  4. How is the Lord described?
  5. Do you see any repeated words?

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. How is Psalm 121 similar to Psalm 120?
  2. Why do you think this particular Psalm was written?
    • What feeling would this instill in those making the pilgrimage to Jerusalem to worship?
  3. If God is the maker of heaven and earth, what does that tell us about the help that he gives?
  4. What does it mean that "the Lord is your keeper"? What does he keep us from?
  5. Is there anything in this passage that points to or foreshadows truths of the gospel? (Remember there might be many answers to this question: does it mirror Jesus in any way? Anything pointing to sin, judgment, salvation, God's love, etc.?)
    1. How many connections can you make?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  1. Where else are you tempted to look for help? Why should we look to God instead?
  2. Are there ways that God could use you in order to help others? What are some examples?
  3. Where in your life do you feel particularly vulnerable or in need of the LORD’s protection? How can this psalm guide your own prayers this week?
  4. How does this psalm encourage us to be faithful in the midst of a fallen world with sin all around us? How does the gospel enable us to do that?
