Two Kings

 

Read Mark 6:14-29

 

  1. What did King Herod hear about?
  2. Who did King Herod think Jesus was? Why did he think that?
    1. What had happened in the past between Herod and John?
    2. How did Herod respond to John’s preaching?
  3. How did John die? What brought it about?
  4. What kind of king does Herod appear to be in this account?

 

Application:

  1. Herod heard John gladly, and yet was willing to kill him in the end. What warning can we take from this about the way we listen to teaching?
  2. How should we learn from John’s example of speaking difficult truth to authority?

 

Read Mark 6:30-44

 

  1. What does Jesus hear about? What is his response?
  2. What happens while he is away with his disciples?
    1. What is Jesus’ response to this crowd? Why does he respond this way?
  3. What is the problem that presents itself?
    1. What does Jesus do in response to the problem--at first?
    2. What does Jesus instruct his disciples to feed them first (consider the start of the chapter)?
    3. What is his second response?
  4. What do his disciples report to him?
  5. How does Jesus feed the people? What Old Testament event does this remind you of?
  6. How are the people described after received Jesus’ care?
  7. How did Jesus use his power? How does that compare to the way Herod used his power?

 

Application:

  1. Jesus called his disciples to come away and rest after their work. What does this teach us about the importance of rest?
  2. Why did Jesus instruct his disciples to feed the crowd? Why does he tell them to do things that only he had power to do?
  3. What does the contrast between Jesus and Herod teach you about the use of power?
  4. What kind of leader is Jesus? What does this make you think about Jesus?

Zechariah’s Prophecy

Read Luke 1:67-79

  1. What provokes Zechariah to prophesy?
  2. Why does Zechariah praise the Lord?
  3. Why does he say God has done this? According to what?
  4. Who is the child he addresses in verse 76?
    1. What is he called?
    2. What will he do?
    3. Why will he do those things?
  5. Read Isaiah 9:2, 40:3-5. How does this inform the meaning of Zechariah’s prophecy?

 

Application:

  1. What informs Zechariah’s praise?
  2. Zechariah has been longing for a child for years. But his prophecy has less to do with his family and more to do with God’s plan of salvation. Why is that?
  3. As we think about God’s faithfulness to keep his promises, how should that apply to our lives?
  4. How can we grow in theologically rich thankfulness, like Zechariah? What would that kind of thankfulness look like for us?
