What does it say?

  1. Read John 6:22–40
  2. What is the setting?
  3. Who is mentioned?
  4. What are repeated words/phrases?
  5. What questions are asked? How are the questions answered?

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. Why did Jesus say the crowd was seeking him?
  2. According to Jesus, what is “the work of God”? (v. 29)
  3. What does Jesus mean by, “I am the bread of life”? (v. 35)
  4. What is “the last day”? (v. 40)

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. How do we seek satisfaction from the things of this world, rather than from Jesus Christ?
  2. How does Jesus being the bread of life rid us of any performance-based relationship with God?

What does it say?

  1. Read Matthew 7:7-11
  2. Identify:
    1. Repeated words, ideas, themes
    2. Commands
    3. Connective words (what do they communicate?)
    4. Promises
    5. Illustrations
    6. Rhetorical questions (answer them)
    7. Comparisons

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. What does it mean to "ask," "seek," and "knock"?
    1. What are we meant to be asking, seeking, and knocking for? 
  2. How does the comparison between the Father in heaven and fathers on earth function?
  3. What does he mean "if you then, who are evil" (v.11)?
  4. How does this passage fit with prayers that are unanswered?
  5. How does this connect to the gospel? (What do we learn about: God; Man; Christ; Our Response?)

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

    1. How should this affect your prayer life? 
      1. Are you tempted to doubt this? How so? What truth in this passage can help you overcome that temptation?
      2. What are you asking for in prayer? Seeking in life? Pursuing eagerly? (Consider your prayer life- what do you spend most time talking to God about?)

 

  • Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made.
