OBSERVATION
What does it say?

  1. Read John 5:16-30
  2. Do you notice any repeated words?
  3. Why were the Jews persecuting and wanting to kill Jesus? (v. 15-18)
  4. In what ways does Jesus compare himself to God?
  5. How does Jesus say that he is different from God the Father?

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. What do you think are the "greater works" that Jesus is talking about in verse 20?
    1. Which work(s) is he comparing to?
    2. Do verses 21-29 help you to see the "greater works" he is talking about?
  2. In verse 24, Jesus promises eternal life to "whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me"
    1. What does it mean to "hear" and to "believe"?
    2. How does this connect with verse 21? 
  3. In verse 25 and in verse 28, the same phrase is used: "an hour is coming..."
    1. Are these talking about different events or one event?
    2. If they are talking about different events, what is the difference between the dead living (v. 25) and those in tombs resurrecting to life (v. 28-29)?
  4. Do you have any questions about the relationship between God the Father and God the Son?

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. How does the relationship between Jesus and God the Father affect us in our daily lives?
  2. Do you have eternal life as it talks about in verse 24?
    1. If not, what more do you need to hear in order to believe?
    2. If yes, when did you first believe? How has hearing the words of Jesus continued to affect you?
  3. What is one thing that you can do this week to live in light of our coming judgment?
  4. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  5. Sing How Sweet and Awesome to God and to one another.

OBSERVATION
What does it say?

  1. Read John 4:43-54
  2. Where was Jesus’ home town (what region was he from)?
  3. What other locations are mentioned here?
    1. Where do the events in verses 46-54 take place?
  4. What is the official’s request?
    1. Does Jesus answer his request?
  5. The themes of faith/belief are seen throughout the book of John. Where do you see those words in this passage?

INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?

  1. What had happened in Jerusalem? (Verse 45)
  2. Read John 2:23-25
    1. Why did those people believe?
    2. Do you notice any other similarities between these passages?
  3. How do you think the Official knew that he should go to Jesus for his son to be healed?
  4. Why do you think Jesus says, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe”?
  5. The man seems to go to Jesus in faith, then responds with faith at Jesus’ words (verse 50), and then believes after his son his healed (verse 53). 
    1. Do you think these are examples of different kinds of belief? Why or why not?
    2. How is seeing (signs, miracles) related to believing?
  6. What do we learn about Jesus in this passage?

APPLICATION
How should it change us?

  1. If you are a Christian, why do you follow Jesus?
    1. What are some bad motivations that someone might call themselves a Christian?
  2. Have you ever been in a situation where you trusted God for something good for you or a loved one, but you didn’t see it right away?
    1. What was it like to live in the in-between time?
    2. How can we cultivate faith so we can trust God before we see him work?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  4. Sing Christ Is Risen, He is Risen Indeed to God and to one another.
