Ruth 3 – 17th December 2021
Observation
What does it say?
- Read Ruth 3.
- What characters are mentioned? How are they described?
- Are there any words you don't know? Some words like "winnowing" and "threshing floor" may be worth looking up.
- What is the goal of Naomi's plan in verse 1?
- In what ways does the author of Ruth draw attention to the privacy of Ruth's meeting with Boaz?
- What does Boaz give Ruth to bring to Naomi? (v. 15-17)
- What has changed for Naomi since we last heard the word "empty" in 1:21?
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- Think back to what we learned about coming under the "wings" in chapter 2.
- How do Deuteronomy 22:12 and Ezekiel 5:3 help to explain the word translated "wing" or "corner"?
- What will it mean for Boaz to spread the corner of his garment over Ruth (verse 9)?
- What do you think it means for Boaz to be a "redeemer"?
- In verse 10, Boaz blesses Ruth for her kindness.
- What was the first act of kindness he is referring to?
- Why are Ruth's actions here such a great kindness towards Boaz?
- What do you think are all the reasons that Ruth is called a "worthy woman" in verse 11?
APPLICATION
How should it change us?
- Rather than passively waiting for something to happen, Ruth and Naomi act deliberately in this chapter.
- How is our faith like this? (deliberate rather than passive)
- Do Ruth's actions mean that she doesn't trust God to act?
- Ruth is unprotected and vulnerable at the feet of Boaz. She depends entirely on his character as the guardian-redeemer.
- What does it mean for us to submit ourselves entirely to the mercy of Jesus our redeemer?
- Where else are we tempted to find our security?
- At the end of the chapter, Ruth receives a promise from Boaz, but the matter is still not finished.
- How is this similar to us as we wait for Christ's return?
- What is one practical way that your confidence in Christ's return can change how you live this week?
