OBSERVATION
What does it say?
- Read John 1:35-51
- Who begins to follow Jesus in verse 37?
- Who did they follow previously?
- Who else follows Jesus in this passage? (4 total)
- How is Jesus described? What are some names given to him? (make a list)
- Jesus tells the two disciples in verse 39 to "come and see". What else does Jesus say the disciples will see? (John 1:50-51)
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- Summarize the passage in one sentence.
- In verse 37, two of John the Baptist's disciples decide to follow Jesus. Why do you think that John the Baptist didn't follow Jesus himself?
- What was John's purpose from God? (think back to John 1:29-31)
- Why does Jesus rename Simon in verse 42?
- Who are some people who were renamed in the Old Testament?
- Who gave them a new name?
- In this passage, the author John gives us some word definitions (John 1:38, 41, 42)
- Why do you think he explains those words?
- What does this reveal about the original audience of this book?
- Read Genesis 28:10-22
- What connections do you see between that passage and John 1:47-51?
- What is the name that Jacob gives to the place where he sees this vision?
- What do you think it means that Jesus says "you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man"?
