Proverbs 4:1-9 | Bible Study Questions
COVENANT HOPE CHURCH
| 21 APRIL 2023
OBSERVATION
What does it say?
Read Proverbs 4:1-9
Do you notice any repeated words or ideas?
How is God mentioned and described in this passage? If He is not mentioned, what other characters do you see? How are they described?
What commands do you see?
What is the result of these commands?
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
What do you think it means to "gain insight”? (Proverbs 4:1,7)
How does the text say that a son is able to gain insight?
Who is the author’s father? (verse 3)
What does it tell you about his father’s instruction that he wanted to pass it down to
his
sons?
Read Deuteronomy 4:9-10. How does this text relate to what’s happening in Proverbs 4?
If you had to summarize the commands in verses 1-8 into one phrase, what would you say? What is Solomon commanding his son to do?
Are there any new aspects to his commands compared with other things we’ve seen so far in Proverbs?
APPLICATION
What will I do?
Think about the commands in verses 1-8. How do you think they apply to Christians today?
What would it look like for a Christian to “forget” wisdom?
What might it look like for a Christian to “forsake” wisdom? (Knowingly or unknowingly)
How would prizing wisdom affect our relationship with God? How would your relationship with God affect your desire and access to wisdom?
Which command stands out as one that you could grow in?
How can you grow in remembering and not forsaking wisdom in that particular area this week?
Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
