Observation

What does it say?

  1. Read John 12:12-36.
  2. What characters are mentioned in our text and who are they? Anyone new?
  3. Do you notice any repeated words or ideas? (even words/ideas that connect to previous sections of John)
  4. How is Jesus described in this chapter? (by himself or by others)
  5. Do you notice any comments by the narrator? (i.e. John 12:16)

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. Do you know the meaning of the word "Hosanna"?
    1. Read Psalm 118:25-27. This is the Psalm quotes in John 12:13. Do you see the word "Hosanna"?
      1. Hosanna means "Save us", and the palm branches being waved in celebration are also mentioned in verse 27 of that Psalm.
    2. Why do you think that the crowd celebrated Jesus in this way? What did they think he was coming into the city to do?
      1. Do you think they were surprised to see their King riding on a lowly donkey rather than a valiant Horse?
  2. What is significant about the Greeks seeking Jesus? (v. 20)
    1. How does this connect with what Jesus says later in verse 32?
    2. What were Philip and Andrew doing the last time they were mentioned in John? (John 1:41-45)
  3. When Jesus mentions the grain of wheat falling to the ground and dying, what is he teaching us about himself?
    1. What is he teaching us about ourselves?
    2. How is this teaching different than what the world might think?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  1. Are we as excited about the idea of meeting with Jesus as the crowd was when he entered the city?
    1. What gets in the way of you praising Jesus exuberantly?
    2. How would reflecting on Jesus' identity motivate you to praise?
      1. He is Savior ("Hosanna!")
      2. He is a powerful and yet humble King  ("sitting on a donkey's colt").
  2. How can you use Psalm 118, or verses from John 12, to personally remind yourself of the goodness of Jesus?
  3. When Jesus teaches about dying to ourselves, it is meant to be challenging. We shouldn't read scripture like that and go unchanged.
    1. In what ways in your life do you need to apply this? (John 12:24-26)
  4. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  5. Sing Glorify Your Name to God and to one another.
