  2. Do you see any repeated words or phrases?
  3. Who is speaking in verses 16-21?
    1. What about in verses 31-36
  4. Who had John the Baptist borne witness to? (v. 22-30)
    1. Why were John's disciples concerned?
  5. Do you notice any similarities between John 3:16 and John 3:35-36? What about differences?

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. John 3:16 is a very familiar verse to many Christians.
    1. What do we learn about God's love in this verse and in the rest of the chapter?
    2. What responses do people have toward God and His love?
  2. In addition to God's love, we also see His judgment.
    1. If God loves the world, why do you think he judges the world?
  3. Look back and Read John 1:1-13
    1. What ideas do you see brought up again here in John 3?
    2. Why do people in the world love to live in the darkness rather than in the light?
    3. What does John 3:20 tell us about why people hate the light? Have you seen this to be true?
  4. Rather than hating the light, John the Baptist is filled with joy because of Christ (the bridegroom, v. 29)
    1. Do John's disciples seem to be filled with joy? (verse 26)
    2. Why do you think John is filled with joy?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  1. In verse 36, the author connects belief AND obedience to eternal life.
    1. Is your life marked by both of these things? Faith and repentance?
    2. If no, what's holding you back? Is there something in your life that you are loving more than "the light"?
    3. If yes, think of a way that you've fallen short this last week and confess it to God and to one another. Praise God for the forgiveness and eternal life that he offers in Christ, and ask him for the strength to keep repenting and trusting.
  2. John the baptist was eager to decrease so that Christ could increase.
    1. What are ways that you can allow Christ to increase in your own life?
    2. Are there also ways that you can grow in serving others?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  4. Sing In Christ Alone to God and to one another.
