John 10:22-42 | Bible Study Questions

Observation

What does it say?

  1. Read John 10:22-42.
  2. What characters are mentioned in our text and who are they?
    1. Where are they speaking?
    2. Where does Jesus go away to? (v.40)
  3. Do you notice any repeated words or ideas? (even from previous sections of John)
  4. How is Jesus described in this chapter? (by himself or by others)
  5. What Old Testament verse does Jesus quote in verse 34?

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. In verse 24, the Jews ask Jesus to tell him plainly if he is the Christ.
    1. How do you think they would have responded if he did that?
    2. Instead of saying "I am the Christ", what does Jesus tell them?
      1. What has he been showing them? (v. 25, 32, 37, 38)
  2. In verses 27-28, Jesus begins talking about sheep again. What new information does he add this time (compared to 10:1-21)?
    1. How does Jesus give eternal life to his sheep? (it might help to look backward at earlier texts in John).
    2. What do you think Jesus means that "no one will snatch them out of my hand"?
  3. Read all of Psalm 82 (it's pretty short)
    1. What is this Psalm about?
    2. What is Jesus' point in referencing this Psalm? Is he saying something about himself, or simply refuting their charge of blasphemy?
  4. As John's gospel progresses, he becomes more and more explicit about his identity.
    1. How does Jesus describe his relationship with God here? (v. 30, 36, etc.)
    2. What do you think about what the Jews say in verse 33? In what things are they correct?
      1. What should they have done if they recognized his miraculous works and understood that he was calling himself God?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  1. Is there a holiday or season of the year when you find it easiest to forget about Jesus? Or is there a season where it is especially difficult to worship Him?
    1. What can you do to change how you walk through that time of year?
  2. The works of Jesus corroborated (or backed up) his words. He "talked the talk" as well as "walked the walk".
    1. Is this true of you? Do the things you do back up the things you say?
  3. When talking about his sheep, Jesus promises to keep those who belong to him.
    1. How is it comforting to realize that no one can "snatch" you out of his hand?
    2. How might it be helpful to have verses like this memorized so that you can call them to mind in a difficult time?
  4. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  5. Sing He Will Hold Me Fast to God and to one another.
