Proverbs 4:10-19 | Bible Study Questions
Observation
What does it say?
- Read Proverbs 4:10-19
- Do you notice any repeated words or ideas?
- How is God mentioned and described in this passage? If He is not mentioned, what other characters do you see? How are they described?
- What commands do you see?
- What is the result of these commands?
- What imagery do you see? (things like analogies, metaphors, similes, etc.)
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- What is a "way" or a "path"?
- Why do you think the author describes following wisdom like a "way"?
- Why does he also describe wickedness and evil as "paths" and "ways"?
- What do you think it means that the path of the righteous is "like the light of dawn"?
- How is it that it "shines brighter and brighter until full day"?
- What does this mean for us as we grow in wisdom? How long does it take to become wise?
- Why is wickedness like darkness?
- What happens when someone walks into a dark room and tries to find something?
- How is it that it "shines brighter and brighter until full day"?
- If you had to summarize the commands in verses 10-19 into one phrase, what would you say? What is Solomon commanding his son to do?
- Are there any new aspects to his commands compared with other things we’ve seen so far in Proverbs?
APPLICATION
How should it change us?
- Think about the commands in verses 13-15. How do you think they apply to Christians today?
- Do you think keeping hold and guarding wisdom are intentional things?
- Do you think it's possible to hold on to wisdom without effort? Why or why not?
- What would it look like for a Christian to “let go” of wisdom?
- What might it look like for a Christian to “avoid” evil?
- Do you think keeping hold and guarding wisdom are intentional things?
- Have you experienced the "light" of wisdom that Solomon speaks about?
- How can you give effort this week to keep hold of wisdom and walk in the way of wisdom? What will that look like?
- Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
- Sing All I Have is Christ to God and to one another.
