OBSERVATION

What does it say?

    1. How is the Psalmist interacting with the Lord in these verses? What verbs is he using to describe this activity towards the Lord? (Psalm 34:1-3)
    2. Who is speaking in Psalm 34:1-3? Who is he speaking to?  And what is the intended purpose?
    3. How did the Psalmist approach the Lord in prayer through these verses? (Psalm 34:4-7)
    4. How did God respond to the prayer of the Psalmist? (Psalm 34:4-7)
    5. What are the actions we are invited to do in Psalm 34:8-10? What are the promises associated with it?
    6. Observe the contrast in verse 10 what is the difference in their outcomes? (Psalm 34:10)
    7. What does David offer to teach in verse 11? What question does he pose in verse 12 to grab his audience's attention? What three specific practical commands are given in verses 13 and 14?  (Psalm 34:11-14)
    8. In Psalms 34:15-16, towards whom are the Lord‘s eyes and years directed? In contrast, what is the Lord‘s posture toward those who do evil, what is their ultimate end?

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

    1. What is the context of Psalm 34 (1 Samuel 21:10-15)
    2. Considering the event in 1 Samuel 21:10-15,  why is it so remarkable that his response was to write a Psalm of praise? What does this teach us about the relationship between fear and worship?
    3. What does it mean to bless the Lord? (Psalm 34:1-3)
    4. What do we learn about God in this passage? What does the assurance of the angel of the Lord encamping around believers signify about God‘s protection? (Psalm 34:4-7)
    5. What do we learn about God in Psalm 34:8-10? What does it mean to taste the Lord?
    6. In Psalm 34:8-10, how can David say that those who fear the Lord have no “lack” when believers clearly still face hardship and need. What kind of lack is being addressed here?
    7. The Psalm uses the phrase fear of the Lord multiple times. How would you define the fear of the Lord? Is it about being terrified of God or something else? (Psalm 34:11-14)
    8. Verse 18 is a famous comfort. What does it mean to be brokenhearted or crushed in spirit? Why would God be particularly near to people in this state? (Psalms 34:19)
    9. Psalms 34:20, is quoted in John 19:36 as a prophecy fulfilled by Jesus on the cross. How does Christ's fulfillment of this verse deepen its meaning for believers?
    10. The Psalm ends with the words “redeem” and “condemned”. What do we learn about God and his response toward the righteous & wicked in this passage? (Psalms 34:15-22)

APPLICATION

What will I do?

    1. David resolved to bless the Lord at all times. Is your praise for God conditional on your circumstances? What is one practical step you can take this week to make praising God a more continual part of your life even in difficult moments.(Psalm 34:1-3)
    2. What are the tangible ways we can encourage one another this week so that together we can magnify the Lord. (Psalm 34:1-3)
    3. How does this idea of the angel of the Lord camping around believers provide us with comfort and security? (Psalm 34:4-7)
    4. How should our prayer life be impacted by what we learn from Psalm 34:4-7.
    5. What does the metaphor young lions teach about the limits of natural strength compared to spiritual dependence? (Psalm 34:8-10)
    6. Do you desire to be taught the fear of the Lord? Are you positioned as a humble child ready to listen to his wisdom through his Word?  (Psalm 34:11-14)
    7. Do a self assessment with regard to the commands mentioned in verse 13 and 14? Repent and turn to the lord in obedience? (Psalm 34:11-14)
    8. How does the phrase in Psalm 34:19 “many are the afflictions of the righteous” challenge the idea that a good life is always an easy life? What is the ultimate hope this Psalm offers to those who are suffering?
    9. Do we live with the confidence that God’s eyes and ears are towards us? How would living with this awareness change our prayer and our daily decisions? 
    10. Have you taken refuge in the lord who is our redeemer? (Psalms 34:22)
