  1. Read John 13:31-38.
  2. Do you notice any repeated words or ideas? (even words/ideas that connect to previous sections of John)
  3. Who is Jesus speaking to in verses 31-35? What about verses 36-38?
  4. Who is glorifying who in verses 31 and 32?

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. Read Leviticus 19:18
    1. What's similar and what is different in this command compared to Jesus' command in verse 34?
    2. What do you think it means for them to love others as Christ has loved them?
      1. How has he loved them so far? (hint: one example is back in John 13:1-7)
      2. How will Jesus love them in the future?
  2. Where is Jesus going? (John 13:33, 36)
    1. Where in John have you seen this before? (hint: go back six chapters)
    2. What do you think Jesus is talking about when he says this?
      1. Could it be his crucifixion? or more than that?
    3. How does this relate to Jesus being glorified (John 13:31-32)
  3. Why do you think Peter is so worried about where Jesus is and why he cannot join?
    1. What does Peter mean when he says he'll lay his life down? (verse 37)
    2. Do you think Peter expects to fight? Who would he imagine fighting or overthrowing?
    3. What do you think it shows about Peter that he'll deny Jesus even though he thinks he'll follow Jesus till the end?
    4. How will Peter's denial affect the glory of God?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  1. Has there been a point in your Christian life where you've denied Jesus? (Perhaps not even with your words, but with your actions?)
    1. If you haven't, take time now to confess that to Jesus and ask Him for forgiveness.
    2. What would it look like to repent of that? What can we learn from Peter's example of proclaiming Jesus boldly after Jesus restores him in John 21:15-19?
  2. Do you love other Christians as Jesus has loved you?
    1. How can you grow in demonstrating love towards God's people in our church?
    2. Is there someone at church who feels especially annoying or difficult to love?
      1. Pray for God's help to love them.
      2. Pray that God would give you an opportunity to show them love through serving or caring for them.
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  4. Sing All Glory Be to Christ to God and to one another.
