What does it mean?

  1. In the book of John so far, what usually follows when Jesus performs a sign or a miracle? [teaching!]
    1. How does this passage relate to the previous passage about Jesus feeding his disciples with a miraculous catch of fish?
  2. What do you think it means when Jesus calls Peter to "feed my sheep"?
    1. Do you think Peter may have felt unable to carry out this task? Why?
    2. For Peter, what will be the cost of carrying out Jesus' instruction?
      1. Do you notice any irony or connections in verses 18-19?
  3. What do verses 18-24 add to the recommissioning of the disciples?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  1. Jesus makes feeding His disciples through His apostles' words a major priority. What does this mean for us as we wait for Jesus' return?
    1. How does this affect the kind of church you seek to be a part of?
    2. How does this affect the way you use your gifts and your time?
  2. Do you ever feel like Peter and wonder why God seems to have chosen a harder path for you to walk?
    1. Do you think you can trust God when He says to you "Follow Me"?
    2. How can you take steps in walking your own path after Jesus, rather than wishing you were walking someone elses?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  4. Sing Behold the Lamb to God and to one another.
