What does it say?
- Read Luke 2:22-35.
- What characters are mentioned in our text and who are they?
- Do you notice any repeated words or ideas?
- What Old Testament quotes or ideas are mentioned?
- What locations are mentioned?
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- Read Exodus 13:2, 12 and Leviticus 12:2-8.
- What was the purpose of Joseph and Mary bringing Jesus to the temple at this time?
- What does this tell you about Jesus?
- What did the appearing of Jesus mean to Simeon?
- What do you think it means that he was "waiting for the consolation of Israel" (verse 25)?
- What does consolation mean?
- Simeon was not the only one waiting for the coming Messiah (Luke 2:38, 24:21, etc.).
- According to verses 30-32, what was going to be the extent of Jesus' work?
- What do you think it means that he was "waiting for the consolation of Israel" (verse 25)?
- Luke 2:34-35 are spoken directly to Mary.
- What was going to be the effect of Jesus' ministry on different groups of people?
- Why would some men "fall"? (check out 1 Peter 2:4-8)
APPLICATION
How should it change us?
- What does "salvation" mean to you?
- Simeon's encounter with Jesus might be summed up well in verse 30 "...my eyes have seen your salvation." Rather than sending us a program for self-improvement or an impersonal force to guide us to better living, God sent a person to us.
- What might this help us understand about salvation?
- How does your relationship with Jesus affect the other relationships and commitments in your life?
- Have you seen the gospel turn some people away, like in verse 34?
- What does this verse mean for us today as we seek to make disciples of "all peoples" (v. 31)?
- Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
- Sing O Come, O Come Emmanuel to God and to one another.
