INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. This is the 7th and last "I am" statement in the book of John.
    1. What does Jesus mean when he says he is the "true vine"?
  2. What do you think it means to abide in Christ? (John 15:4-7,9-10)
    1. What does the word "abide" mean?
      1. A dictionary will tell you that it means to "remain" or "stay in a place for a period of time". It has the same root as the word "abode" or "home".
    2. What is the result of abiding in Christ?
    3. What is the result of not abiding in Christ?
  3. What does "fruit" look like in the lives of believers?
  4. How do the purpose statements in this passage help you to understand why Jesus is saying these things? (John 15:11, 17)
    1. How might obeying Jesus' commands and bearing fruit create joy in our lives?
  5. Read Isaiah 5:1-7
    1. Who is the vine in these verses?
    2. What kind of fruit have they bore?

    2. What fruit do you see in one another's lives? (fellow church members, Christian friends, spouse, etc.)
      1. Make an effort to encourage them this week by sharing what specific fruit you see in their lives
  2. How can we love one another as Christ has loved us? (John 15:12-13)
    1. What is one way you can lay your life down for another this week?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  4. Sing O Fount of Love to God and to one another.
