- What specific things does Jesus pray for?
- Are there any words you need to define before moving to interpretation?
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- How would you summarize what Jesus is praying for in verses 1-5?
- What is "the hour" that he is speaking of?
- How does this bring glory to the Father and to the Son?
- How would you define eternal life? How is Jesus' definition in verse 2-3 different than you might expect?
- How would you summarize what Jesus is praying for in verses 6-19?
- What do you think it means when Jesus says "Yours they were, and you gave them to me"? (v. 6) or that Jesus "kept" them? (v. 12)
- What is the intention of Jesus prayer for his disciples? (v. 13)
- Who/what is "the world"? (it's been used a lot in the book of John)
- Why wouldn't Jesus want his disciples to leave the world? Wouldn't it be better for them if they left?
- Maybe you've heard of being "in the world but not of the world". How do these verse help you to understand that phrase? (v. 14-17)
- What do you think it means that Christ "consecrated" or "sanctified" himself in verse 19? Wasn't Jesus already holy?
- It means he gave himself wholly and fully to the work to which God called him.
- What, then, does it mean for Christ's followers to sanctify themselves?
