INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. When we ask in Jesus' name, why is it important to know that Jesus does not ask the Father on our behalf?
    1. Read John 14:21. How is this promise seen here in John 16:27?
    2. What does this mean for our prayers? Do we need to go through any "middle man" to speak with the Father?
  2. When will Jesus go to the Father? (John 16:28)
    1. If you're not sure about the answer, what are some possible answers? Which one do you think fits best with what Jesus has been describing in this chapter?
  3. What is it that the disciples now understand about Jesus?
    1. Why do you think Jesus questions their understanding and belief in John 16:31?
    2. What is Jesus predicting will happen?
  4. What comfort does Jesus leave them with?
    1. Where else have you seen promises about comfort/peace in the Upper Room Discourse (John 13-17)?

  1. When you pray to the Father, do you ever consider that you have direct communication access to the creator of the universe?

    2. What are some big things that you can ask God for?
  2. Have you ever let Jesus down as one of his disciples?
    1. Where can you find strength to remain faithful to God when life is difficult? (remember verses 32 & 33)
    2. In what way does Jesus' resurrection victory give you comfort and peace?
    3. How can you pursue peace in Jesus this week?
  3. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  4. Sing Jesus Shall Reign to God and to one another.
