INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. Read Leviticus 23:33-43.
    1. What is the reason for celebrating this feast?
    2. What instructions does God give them for the feast?
    3. If you have time, read this article to find out more about this feast.
  2. What did Jesus' brothers tell him to do?
    1. Why did they say this? Does it seem like some sort of challenge?
    2. How did Jesus respond?
    3. How is their logic in verse four similar to many people’s logic in the world?
    4. What do we learn from verse 5?
  3. Why do you think Jesus went up to the feast in secret? (verse 10)
    1. What do people think about Jesus?
    2. What do these Jews get wrong about Jesus? (v. 12)
  4. Even though Jesus made a quiet entrance, he did not shrink back from teaching boldly.
    1. What are the Jews impressed by? (verse 15)
    2. How is Jesus able to teach in this way?
    3. What does this mean for the credentials someone needs to teach God's word?
  5. Jesus uses the language a couple of times of being "sent" (v. 18, 28)
    1. What does it mean that Jesus was "sent" from the Father?
    2. How is this possible if Jesus is also "one" with the Father?
    3. How does John 1:1-4 help you to understand that Jesus was both God and sent from God?
      1. This is called the "eternal generation" of the son, which means "from all eternity, the Father communicates the one, simple, undivided divine essence to the Son." How should it change us?

  1. Have you ever had a close family member not believe in Jesus? Or think he was just a "good man"? (v. 5, 12)
    1. What are some reasons that people don't believe?
    2. Even Jesus' brothers did not believe him at this point. How can you take comfort knowing that you are not alone in this?
    3. The book of James is likely written by Jesus' brother. What do you think changed between John 7 and when that book was written?
    4. What would it look like to entrust your own friends or family's faith into God's hands? (John 6:44)
  2. What else do you learn about Jesus from these verses? (perhaps specifically from what he says in verses 16-24 or 28-29)
    1. If what Jesus says in this book really is true (v. 18, 28), how would that change the way you're living?
