- Do you notice any repeated words or ideas? (even words/ideas that connect to previous sections of John)
- Who is named in these verses?
- How are each of them described?
- What emotions do we see in Jesus?
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- Read Psalm 41:9-13
- How is this scripture fulfilled in Jesus, as John 13:18 says?
- What is the purpose of the scripture being fulfilled? (John 13:19)
- How do you think Jesus' prediction of betrayal in verses 18-19 connects with what he says in verse 20?
- Who is he speaking about in verse 20? (the "sent ones")
- What do you think it mean to "receive" the one Jesus sends?
- What's the promise to that person who receives Jesus? What does that mean?
- Who is the disciple "Jesus loved"?
- If it is John, what does it say about John that he didn't name himself as that person?
- It might seem strange that Jesus said what he said in verse 26, but then the disciples didn't understand in verse 28. How might this be possible?
- Had they not heard Jesus' reply to John's question? Or did they think that since they were all eating bread with Jesus that they were all in danger of betraying Jesus?
- What might have happened to Judas if the disciples knew what he was about to do?

How should it change us?
- Have you ever had a close friend who was unable to sympathize with what you're going through? Have you ever had a friend betray you?
- How does it comfort you that Jesus had a close friend betray him? (Hebrews 2:18)
- Can you see God's hand at work through those difficult events of your past and how he used them for good?
- What does the story of Judas teach us about repentance in our own lives?
- What happens if we continue to harden our heart towards Jesus?
- What is a sin you can confess from this last week? What would it look like to repent with a soft heart towards the Lord?
- Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
- Sing Oh the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus to God and to one another.
