  • What do you already know about this book of the Bible?
    1. Who wrote it?
    2. What is it about?
  • Read Lamentations chapter 1.
  • What are your first impressions of this passage?
    1. How is the style of writing in this passage different than the style in the book of John?
    2. How would you describe the overall mood?
  • Do you notice any repeated words or ideas in these chapters?
  • What requests are made to God in this passage? (verse 9, 11, etc.)

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  • What "ingredients" make up Jerusalem's sorrow here? (e.g. loneliness, no place to rest, etc.)
    1. What was the cause of Jerusalem's woes? (v. 5, 8, 18, 20)
    2. What do you think led them to rebel against God?
  • What is God's role in this?
    1. Evil has been done against Jerusalem, but is the Lord in the wrong? (verse 18)
    2. What is God's purpose in these catastrophic events?
    3. Why isn't the Lord evil for bringing destruction on Jerusalem like this?

APPLICATION

How should it change us?

  • What woes or difficulties in our world today might be linked to our collective rebellion against God?
    1. How do you see rebellion in God in your own life? What are ways that you are tempted to rebel against God's word?
    2. When you are faced with temptation and sin, do you feel safe going to the Lord for comfort?
    3. Jesus tells us to pray and ask God that we not be led into temptation (Matthew 6:13). And if we do sin, we are not left without a comforter. Read 1 John 2:1-2.
      1. How does knowing that Jesus is our advocate help us to lament to God over our sin?
  • Why do you think some churches or congregations want to focus on celebration and victory in their worship services?
    1. Do you think we need to include more than just celebration in a worship service? Why or why not?
    2. How can laments in the Bible be used to encourage us to be completely honest with God?
    3. How might God use our laments for His glory and our good?
  • Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  • Sing O God of Mercy, Hear our Plea to God and to one another.
