COVENANT HOPE CHURCH
| 20 SEPTEMBER 2023
OBSERVATION
What does it say?
- Read Proverbs 6.20-35
- Do you notice any repeated words or ideas?
- How is God mentioned and described in this passage?
- If He is not mentioned, what other characters do you see?
- How are they described?
- What commands do you see?
- What is the result of these commands?
- What imagery do you see? (things like analogies, metaphors, similes, etc.)
INTERPRETATION
What does it mean?
- What should be done with the parent's commands?
- Why do you think it's important that the son not just obey them but "bind them on his heart"?
- Why do you think the tongue of the evil woman is described as "smooth"?
- How is the speech of the evil woman contrasted with the parent's commands?
- Why do you think the son is commanded at the level of his heart, rather than just the level of his actions? (Prov. 6:25)
- How do the Father and Mother compare/contrast prostitution to adultery in verse 26? What about between adultery and theft in verse 30-31?
- How would you summarize the heart of the author's point in this week's passage?
- For what reasons is it important for all of us (whether we're married or not) to hear these words about the purity and beauty of marriage?
APPLICATION
What will I do?
- Is this something that our culture today (and we ourselves!) still needs to hear?
- If you're in a mixed group, break off into a group of men and a group of women to discuss the following questions. (~10 minutes)
- What are ways that we are tempted to visit the "forbidden woman/man"? (i.e. accessing pornographic websites, etc.)
- Sexual sin is something we all struggle with. Read 1 John 1:8-2:2.
- What is one sexual sin you can confess from the last week or so?
- Read 1 Corinthians 10:12-13. How does this give us hope to fight temptations?
- Pray in light of this passage, the forgiveness we have in Christ, and about any applications you have made
- Come back together as a group and pray once more in light of this passage.
- Sing Come Thou Fount to God and to one another.
