What does it say?

  1. Read Exodus 32
  2. Do you notice any repeated words or ideas?
  3. What do you observe about God from these verses?
  4. What is one question you have from the chapter that you hope to have answered?

INTERPRETATION

What does it mean?

  1. What did Aaron and the people of Israel do to anger the Lord (and Moses)?
    1. When Aaron declared a feast to the idol, who did he say the feast was for? (Ex. 32:5)
    2. What does this teach us about our worship, even if it's directed towards God?
    3. Why do you think the people of Israel were so drawn towards idolatry?
  2. How do you see God's mercy in His interaction with Moses and through Moses’ prayer for Israel?
    1. Do you think God would have been wrong to blot Israel out because of their sin?
    2. On what basis did Moses plead with God to show mercy and grace to Israel? (Ex. 32:11-14)
  3. How does Jesus give us hope against idolatry today?
    1. Read Jeremiah 31:31-34.
      1. How does the Old Covenant differ from the New Covenant?
    2. Should the New Covenant people of God have to struggle against sins like idolatry? (cross reference Colossians 3)

How should it change us?

  1. What can followers of Jesus today learn from Aaron’s failure?
  2. What idols are you tempted to worship in your own life? Ask yourself some of these questions (and questions like these) to help you identify idols in your heart:
    1. What do you love? Is there something you love more than God or your neighbor?
    2. What do you want? What do you desire? What do you crave, long for, wish? Whose desires do you obey?
    3. What do you seek? What are your personal expectations and goals? What are your intentions? What are you working for?
    4. Where do you bank your hopes? What hope are you working toward or building your life around?
    5. What do you fear? Fear is the flip side of desire. For example, if I desire your acceptance, then I fear your rejection.
  3. How can you take a step this week in putting those idols to death and trusting and worshipping God as He deserves?
  4. Pray in light of this passage and about any applications you have made
  5. Sing Holy, Holy, Holy to God and to one another.
